SM&P Participates in the Light the Way 5k, Benefiting the City of Marietta
A windy evening and light rain falling seconds before the official start didn’t stop participants for the third annual Light the Way 5k benefiting the City of Marietta School system’s Graduate Marietta initiative on Saturday. Wearing race shirts and plenty of glow-in-the-dark accessories, the nearly 300 runners and walkers enjoyed games and activities prior to the Tot Trot, 1-mile fun run/walk, and Peachtree Qualifying 5k.
The school system event also proudly supported phantom runners who donated or sponsored the event. Each school within the system sought to have representation from their school for all levels of running/walking ability.
Aimee Bush, a Stearns-Montgomery & Proctor paralegal assistant, ran the 5k with her six-year-old son, Aiden. “This is his first 5k,” the Marietta resident said. “He probably ran more than 3.1 miles considering he would run ahead and have to come back to me,” she laughed. Just like the other young runners, their excitement about running in the dark, and rain and having plenty of glow-in-the-dark bracelets and necklaces “added to the fun,” Aimee added.
Supporting literacy programs in local school system is a focus for Stearns-Montgomery & Proctor partner and founder, Mary Montgomery. “It is important to support our children,” said Mary, also a Kiwanian. “We help where we can, and efforts such as working with the Kiwanis Club of Marietta’s comprehensive approach to literacy was an easy sale.”
Working with children and looking out for the children of community isn’t only through the family law practice but also in the community. “I have really enjoyed my Kiwanis membership,” said Mary. “We are making a difference,” she added. One of the goals of the Kiwanis Club of Marietta is to raise funds to support literacy, and “Light the Way” promotes Graduate Marietta!
